AU History:

(Any and all references to Usagi Tsukino in Harima's AU History are made with the mundane's collaboration and permission.)

Born the first child to a working class father and mother who helped part-time in the medical center, Harima grew up near the industrial sector of town and always found himself dreaming of something bigger and better. His parents and younger brother are unenlightened..but, it quickly became clear that Harima may have been a different case. Realizing that he wasn't going to get anywhere by living with his parents, Harima struck out on his own in his early teens for about a year or two, taking odd jobs to pay for a bed and food and fighting anyone who dared to question his decisions in life. He had a bad attitude and a mean right hook, and went around looking for fights at the slightest provocation in those days.

...That was why the Gengar who suddenly appeared on the streets late one night looked like just another opportunity for him to vent, instead of registering as something dangerous like it would for anyone else. The little tearful blonde with the pig tails didn't matter at all...at least, until the Gengar grew tired of screwing around and left the scene. Tired and bleeding from a gash on his back, he turned to face the girl for the first time...

And she was still crying, but he saw how pretty she was through the tears.

His stomach tied itself into knots and his heart grew lighter in that moment-- it was a feeling that he didn't recognize beyond it's basic concept:

Love.

He wanted to see that girl again.

Resolving to change himself and become a better person, Harima grew his hair out and donned a pair of dark sunglasses, hoping that he could find a way to get close to her without scaring her again. He cleaned up his act as well and, upon realizing how hard it would be to keep up with his studies and maintain his living situation, he begged his older cousin-- a physics teacher on campus-- to let him live under her roof. It wasn't free, as nothing worthwhile in life ever was but it afforded the chance he had run away from home to find, the chance for something more.

He worked hard on his studies, kept his absenses to a bare minimum, and eventually found a way into that blonde girl's class. It was there that he finally learned her name was Usagi Tsukino...and nothing else mattered. Not where love was concerned.

A series of misunderstandings, aborted love confessions, and a particularly rowdy swinub lead to his suspension from school for a few days, during which time he found the Habitat to be a comfortable place to hide. It was there that he met Yakumo Tsukamoto, a quiet girl who was a year younger than him, helping out in the facility. She was gentle and non-judgemental, the exact kind of person he needed by his side when he realized that the best way to deal with his frustrations wasn't by throwing his fists, but by drawing them out.

Enlisting her help as a formatting assistant, Harima set out to draw a manga that was a fantasized chronicle of his misadventures.

...and maybe, just maybe, it could turn out to be the best love confession he could ever offer.

Canon Personality: Brash, impulsive, and very loud about his distaste for criticism and authority, it's easy to brush Harima aside as just another delinquent thug who rarely attends class and picks fights simply for the satisfaction of throwing his fist into another's face. The sunglasses, leather jacket, and goatee he donned after falling for Tenma Tsukamoto do nothing to help with this assumption-- and, indeed, help reinforce it in many respects.

No one wants to screw with a bad boy, even if his intentions are to become someone more approachable in life.

His love for Tenma catalyzed his character growth, spurring him to work harder, be more honest, and try to be a little more mindful of how his actions affect others or how others may think or feel in everyday interactions. However, although he learns and accepts early on that Tenma will never return his affections because of her love for Ooji Karasuma, he still persists in trying to tell her if only for the personal closure the act will grant him. His various attempts at confessing lead to a series of comical misunderstandings between himself and Tenma's friends, including her younger sister, that drive him so far up a wall that he attempted to leave the country on a fishing boat at one point, following the childish whim that sailing across the ocean would solve all of his problems.

It wouldn't. And, although he is so single minded that he has trouble seeing beyond his immediate experiences, it takes him a few cycles of this pattern to learn this core lesson and try out an alternative method.

He took to drawing instead of giving in to his impulses.

While he remains relatively dumb in his own words, he finally starts to be a little more honest and reasonable with himself and other people. And, eventually, he finds it in himself to help the girl he loves go off to be with the boy she loves even if doing so breaks his own heart.

AU Deviation:

The biggest deviation between BNW-verse Harima and Canon-verse Harima is the displacement of his affection from Tenma Tsukamoto to Usagi Tsukino. This was an executive decision oocly, because there are very few School Rumble players and the dynamics of Harima's character arc are not something that I as a player wanted to relegate to an NPC. The ultimate result remains the same: Harima changes himself (in the most clumsy way possible) so he could be closer to the girl he has a crush on and, hopefully, eventually become someone that she looks upon with fondness instead of fear.

In context with growing up in such a prosperous city, even if it was on the lower-class end, Harima has a little more understanding of what life could be like for him if it were different instead of just different. He has a slightly more defined goal beyond just changing for the girl he loves, like he does in canon-- his understanding of the world, though it is limited still, has shown him that it is possible to still have something better than what you already have. Not only that, this notion of being better is somehow attainable. If Pokemon can do it every day, then why can't people find a way to do something similar?

Canon Abilities:

Although he lacks any kind of formal training, Harima is a skilled enough brawler that he is able to take on thugs three times his size and black belt level martial artists on equal terms. Lashing out with his trademark Hurricane Kick, he is a formidable fighter in his own right, and his attitudes in the past have given him quite the reputation as a fearsome delinquent. His penchant for dark colors in his wardrobe and his fondness for motorcycles hasn't helped this matter either. These skills work in tandem with his single minded stubbornness and his endurance level that is so high that he can withstand being hit by a truck with little more than a broken arm and a bruised ego to show for it. Overall, Harima is clearly a young man who deserves his rep.

However, he's skilled with tasks that are traditionally more feminine as well. He's a talented enough cook who is able to impress his classmates with his skills on a school trip, an artist who is good enough to get attention from professionals if he can keep his mouth shut, and is such an imaginative writer that he is actively working on getting published by a manga serial magazine despite only having three months of practical experience in the field.

Stranger skills of his include being able to take down ancient forest beasts with his bare hands, being resistant to having his mind read because he is so stubbornly singleminded, and somehow being able to befriend and communicate fluently with animals of all sizes and forms. He's also quite the adept guerilla strategist despite calling himself dumb at various points during the series. Even if his grades are poor, he still paid enough attention in class to have have named all of his animal friends after famous conquerors.

He's also good at almost any sport he bothers to pick up, and he can drive in a variety of weather and traffic conditions.

Enlightened Abilities:

Harima is fighting/dark type enlightened with the Kindred Soul perk, mimicking his canon knack for dirty fighting and his affinity for animals.

As he grows in strength, Harima's strength, agility, and endurance will grow as well; at low levels he's just a few steps above an ordinary human, but at higher levels he'll be able to damage concrete with his bare hands and withstand being barreled over by an angry Rhyhorn with only moderate damage.

His initial form will give him access to low level fighting and dark abilities that mimic moves like Low Kick, Double Kick, Feint Attack and Taunt. His second form will expand upon these with his increased strength and speed, letting him access abilities similar to Payback, Sucker Punch, Dynamic Punch and Revenge. In his final form, Harima will be able to access moves that resemble Reversal, Close Combat, Parting Shot and Foul Play.

His Hurricane Kick, of note, is his signature move in canon-- and basically amounts to the equivilant of a high flying dynamic entry or, in known typed moves, High Jump Kick. His first evolution will give him full access to this, although he's liable to use the term 'Hurricane Kick' at other times because of his name, Harima Kenji.

The Enlightened ability Kindred Soul will be evident on his person for his entire time in the game. It is something so ubiquitous to Harima in canon that, in context of this alternate interpretation, he won't even think of it as a skill that sets him apart from anyone else. In fact, he might be more disturbed to know that other people don't look at it the same way he does.

Starter Pokémon: A Swinub called Napoleon that he found out on the streets.

Notes/Special Considerations:

I'm not entirely sure how this will play out in the context of the game yet, but in-canon Harima's coping strategy for dealing with the mess of misunderstandings among his peers is to chronicle a fantasized version of his misadventures in manga format...which he then goes and tries to get published under the pen name Harima Hario. I would like to follow a similar pattern at some point down the line, in a few months' time, if that is possible.

If it's not, he's still going to draw. He just won't try to get published.

It was dark by the time he finally returned to the apartment that night with the remnants of the afternoon's torrential rain storm still lingering on his jacket, in his hair, and between the strands of the little Swinub's dense brown fur. It's nose snuffled at the sleeve of his coat as he dug through his pockets for his copy of the key to the front door, the one that he could have sworn he had grabbed when he was rushing out of the house that morning.

...he came up with nothing. Just a couple coins of change leftover from his measly lunch and some crumpled up scrap paper he had picked up at some point in the day.

Grumbling in frustration, he tried the door once-- it was locked, but the interior lights were on.

Taking a breath, he lifted a hand and rapped against the painted wood paneling.

"Hey, Itoko! Open the door, I know you're in there!"

Nothing. Just the sound of running water and a tea kettle's shrill whistle.

The Swinub shifted in his arm and snorted, tilting it's head to look at him when he clenched his hand into a fist. He could almost hear his cousin chiding him on watching his manners and being more polite. She was, after all, his guardian and provider so long as he lived under her roof.

Taking another deep breath he tried again:

"Hey, Miss-- Miss Itoko. I kind of lost my key, and I kind of have a little problem..."

His stomach growled before he could finish speaking, punctuating the sentence with his flushed look of embarrassment.

"...Okay. More than a little problem. Could we talk inside?"
